With the launch of the Radeon HD 7970 on 9 January this year, AMD has taken the single GPU crown from Nvidia and left them without an answer until Kepler launches later this year. In order to fill the void, Nvidia plans to launch a stop-gap GPU which will go by the name of GeForce GTX 680 and will launch in February.

Sources say that the GeForce GTX 680 will trade blows with the Radeon HD 7970, although it won’t be as fast as the upcoming Kepler 100 based GeForce GTX 780. Graphics cards based on the GeForce GTX 680 are reported to have 2 GB of memory which would imply either a 256-bit or 512-bit bus, and will have a clock speed of 780 MHz. Jonathan Horne
